What is Global Warming?

Before anyone can take a look at the effects of global warming and what it does to businesses and the weather, you must first take a look at the concept of global warming. In order to understand why global warming may or may not have an effect on businesses it must first be looked at the whole concept of global warming and what exactly it means.

Global warming is the scientific belief that the average temperature of the Earth is being increased because of numerous factors. The temperature of the oceans and air are reaching new levels which causes global warming to have an adverse effect on the weather and surrounding areas.

The causes of global warming have long been debated. Many scientists believe that what is causing this increase in the Earth’s temperature is that many of the gases and pollutants that are used by humans all across the globe are being trapped in the ozone layer. When these gases and pollutants are being trapped it causes the globe to heat up the oceans and air and starts the chain effects known as global warming.

On the outside might seem a bit dramatic to believe that just because the oceans are a little warmer and the summers are a bit hotter to go into such a wide spread scientific approach. However, there is more going on with global warming then warm oceans and hot air. Polar ice caps are melting at a rapid pace which is causing many of the oceans and lakes of the world to rise. Areas are experiencing extreme weather conditions such as harsh blizzards and extreme periods of heat and no rain.

Global warming is still a hotly debated issue. While some people believe that it can cause extreme problems to the globe, others believe that it is just a short lived effect of the Earth. Even with the differences in opinions the fact remains that there is some type of global warming.

Environmental Tip: What Electronic Waste Does to the Environment

Technology has become such a predominate part of our daily lives that when one computer or television set breaks most people do not think twice about tossing it in the trash. This type of mindset is very common with businesses who are not aware of the impact that electronic waste can have on the environment. These businesses believe that electronic waste is not a concern and continue to toss out computer monitors, television sets and printers. However, electronic waste is very dangerous to the environment. Here is a look at what types of effects electronic waste has on the environment.

Landfill Waste. Many of the computers and electronics that are tossed out are not bio-degradable. This means that when they are tossed out by the companies these products just sit in landfills and will never go away. Many landfill companies have started tossing the electronics out in foreign countries. These countries have found out that electronic waste has lead not only to land pollution but also water pollution. Some of the chemicals in the screens breakdown and leak into the drinking water of these nations. Even if the landfill waste does not head to a foreign country it will still pollute that area around the electronics. Many electronics contain lead, arsenic and other chemicals that will be absorbed into the land that it sits on. Once absorbed the chemicals will go into the soil and could end up in the plant and animal life that people eat every day.

Air Pollution. Some electronic waste companies will try to burn or incinerate the electronics that are thrown out. While this option will eliminate the physical waste of the electronics it creates a bigger problem for air pollution. Harmful chemicals and pollutants are put into the air which goes back into the air that everyone breathes.

These environmental effects are why businesses need to start an electronic recycling program within their company.
